Remodeling a country house to achieve comfort

At first, the two of us came for a quiet getaway, but when our friends joined us, the four of us gathered in the cozy country house, sharing a time filled with endless laughter. The warmth of the space itself brought comfort to our hearts just by being together. I was a little worried when I heard it was cold outside, but those worries were unfounded: the interior was cozy and warm. The bedding was especially clean and fragrant, feeling like it gently embraced the day's fatigue. The kitchenette was fully equipped, so we just bought the ingredients and cooked for ourselves. The food and laughter we made together made us feel stronger, both physically and mentally. I gained a little weight, but even that was a happy memory. 😊 The six cats, and even the feral cats watching us quietly through the window... their very presence was a great comfort. Those moments of silent gazing were truly healing. I wanted to stay longer, but I had to turn back because of my next schedule, which was a shame. It was a precious time, a chance to take a break from my tiring daily life and catch my breath. With the energy I gained here, I feel I can get through this year as well. I definitely want to return.

I used to think of accommodations as just places to sleep, so I didn't put much emphasis on them. But this summer vacation, I wanted to focus on complete relaxation for my husband, children, and I. So, I decided to stay for a week and was searching for accommodations all over the country when this house caught my eye. And after that, I couldn't find any other place to stay. Haha. After deciding on a place to stay, I started to wonder what this vacation would be like. I wondered if my husband, who always watches TV, would be able to handle it. With that in mind, I arrived at the place and spent a day filled with just cooking, hanging laundry, quietly resting, rolling around, and stargazing at night. My routine was to barely feed the kids in the morning and eat my first meal in the afternoon, but having a separate kitchen was so nice that I woke up in the morning and immediately wanted to go make dinner! I hurried out, haha. Having my own space, completely untouched by anyone, is truly exciting and invigorating. My husband, who was worried he'd experience TV withdrawal, created his own little study as soon as he arrived. He spent quality time reading the books he'd wanted to read and catching up on work he'd been putting off. He also got along better with the cats than I expected. Despite my fear of cats, he fed them well, searched for them when they weren't there, and talked to them when they showed up. We had a great time. And at home, my daughter, who used to jump up at the slightest sound in the morning, seemed to find the chirping of insects and cicadas so comfortingly soothing white noise. She slept soundly every day, waking up refreshed. She saw the sun streaming in through the window, the twinkling trees, took walks around the neighborhood, and at night, she enjoyed nature to the fullest. Thanks to that, my appetite improved, and I came home feeling chubby and full after a week. :) It's a shame that the ongoing heatwave prevented us from fully utilizing the wooden deck and pergola, but other than that, I love the energy of home, and I think it'll be a time I'll cherish and remember for a long time. When life gets hectic and rushed, this time is a time to be enjoyed. I'm having a good time reminiscing about the days, and when the wind blows, I want to go there again, have a barbecue, and take a nap on the floor. I'll go back when I need the warmth you give me. I stayed with my kids for two weeks during the winter vacation. We had a great vacation in the yard with a wide view and the pretty and cute indoor and outdoor spaces that were remodeled to make good use of the Hanok structure. It snowed a lot during our stay, so we made a snowman in the yard, had a snowball fight, gave snacks and food to the cats that came and went in the yard, and had fun running around inside and outside the house without worrying about noise between floors. These were good memories for the kids. For me, as an adult, 1) the quiet mornings when I watched the sun rise over the mountain in front of the yard, 2) the evenings when I could hear the sound of snow falling because the neighborhood was so quiet, and 3) the kitchen area was separate, so I could finish the dishes by myself, drink coffee, and read a book (it was a rare moment of silence because I couldn't hear the kids in the main house). It's a country house, so it has a sense of grandeur, and I was notified before I checked in that it was cold, but it was quite cold because a cold wave warning was issued while I was staying there. There is a heater and radiator to heat the air, but it gets quite dry. If you are staying in the middle of winter, it would be good to bring a humidifier, an electric blanket, and a fleece jacket or light vest to wear indoors. If you go in spring or fall when there is no need for heating or cooling, you can enjoy the yard and indoors to the fullest, so it was a great place to visit again in a good season!

The annex kitchen is quiet and secluded, so I was worried about the cat following me when I went in and out. On the first day, the cat accidentally went in, and I had a hard time playing hide-and-seek. After spending time with the cats, the older one even let me touch him, and we became close. The sun shines brightly during the day, but even in early November, the temperature drops considerably at night. Even though the ceiling heater is warm, it dries out quickly and is noisy, making it difficult to sleep. I think it would be a good idea to bring an electric blanket. For the first time since retiring from my 30-year career, I've been enjoying a completely uninterrupted time without any distractions.

In the process of finishing my 28-year career, I wavered between regret and determination countless times. When both my sons became college students and went off to their own places of life, I wanted to fully sense the existence of ‘me’ free from the major roles I had been assigned. With a vague desire to live as a natural person, I searched for country houses every day, and the algorithm connected me to Live Anywhere’s Buyeo country house. The moment I saw the view in the photo, I was reminded of my grandmother’s house that I used to visit every vacation when I was a child. I made a reservation out of curiosity and impulse, but I wondered if I, who was always surrounded by so many people due to my job, could endure a quiet country life. I arrived at the accommodation alone late at night, so it was dark all around, but I felt a strange sense of comfort. It was a house full of convenience and aesthetics, with a low stone wall, a cute and cozy garden, a well-arranged living space and furniture, and a comfortable bed. The house structure, divided into the main building, annex, and pagoda, brought out just the right amount of activity that was neither busy nor helpless for the weakened constitution that had been difficult to overcome for a long time due to menopause. I gave food to the stray cat, ‘Kkobali’, who came to visit every day and talked to him softly, and I had the experience of interacting closely with an animal for the first time in my life. Buyeo is famous for its Baekje historical sites, but I hardly went out for 12 days except for shopping. The time I spent alone at home was very peaceful and abundant. Every day, whether it was a sunny day, a cloudy day, or a rainy day, each had its own charm and breathed the emotions of spring into my house. At night, I fell asleep, and in the morning, my eyes widened. I felt light when I came out of bed, and I made food with all my heart every day just for myself. She picked rosemary and spearmint that grew luxuriantly in the garden and backyard and made tea, and picked lettuce, chives, mugwort, and green onions from the garden and made salads, pickled vegetables, pancakes, and stews, treating me like a queen. Depending on the weather or mood, we enjoyed wonderful meals at various cafes, such as the dining table in the annex, the side table on the deck, the wooden table in the pergola, and by the fireplace in the living room, as if we were having a picnic. Although I stayed home alone for more than a week, I never felt bored or empty for a single moment. The feeling that ‘I am enough’ filled me up like water rising from dry willow branches in the moist spring rain. I just greeted the elderly neighbors, but they kindly shared information about the area and brought me a basket of spinach, lettuce, chives, water parsley, and sedum. I had a barbecue with my family and friends who visited on the weekend, looked at the stars in the night sky, and talked quietly for a long time. Seeing my husband, who had taken a vacation until Labor Day, reading a book on the deck with a mat spread out, I felt attached to it and very affectionate, as if it were a house we had built with our sweat. At that moment, I could sense that the deep happiness that filled my body and mind would become a solid foundation for our relationship. As I deeply encountered myself as a natural person in the appropriate sense of openness and coziness that the house provided, I was able to clearly see what psychological elements I needed to dream of a second life. They were ‘the freedom not to be forced by anything’ and ‘the sense of stability that just existing as myself is enough.’ As I learned about my essential desires, the end of my long career did not feel like ‘a feeling of retreat’ but rather ‘a transition to nurture a new dream.’ This country house in Buyeo, which warmly embraced me and allowed me to rest after months of suffering, is truly precious and I am so grateful. I am so grateful to the host who created, maintained, and shared such an excellent healing space. The host and the house gave me the gift of health recovery that I could not achieve after months of hospital visits. I want to love and share more deeply with myself, who was reborn with the power of a space where I can be safe and free.

I stayed here for a week at the end of 2023. My friend and I made a reservation because we wanted to end the year in a quiet place without people for a week. Thanks to the kind host, we had a much better time than we expected, so I am leaving a review with a grateful heart. First of all, as soon as we arrived, I completely fell in love with the house, which was much prettier and more adorable than I thought! Every nook and cranny was well-decorated, and my friend and I were so excited to run around and look around. Since it was the end of the year, there was heavy snow on one day, the sun was shining brightly on another day, and the fog was thick on another day, so we spent our time enjoying a variety of scenery. The neighborhood was really quiet, and we could see the mountains, so we really enjoyed our week in this pretty house. And most of the things we need for daily life are provided. I am a total peddler, so I brought everything, but most of it was prepared so that I only had to bring light clothes. It was quite cold because it was winter, but the electric mat, five-room stove, and heater were all installed so well, so we had a great time! The host is also really kind. I contacted him a few times because I had some questions while using the place, and he was really kind to answer them. Thank you for renting such a pretty house.
