Surroundings & additional info

Nonghyup Hanaro Mart I sit on the veranda and look at the white clouds hanging over the roof. I listen to the sound of the wind blowing through the curve of the eaves. At night, I soak my heart in the moonlight softly shining on the windows. The old house is filled with analog sensibility. It embraces travelers with warmth rather than convenience, and with a generous heart as much as the years have passed. The wind blows in Suncheon Bay. The reeds sway in the wind, making a “sharararak~” sound. The sun running toward the horizon adorns the reeds with gold. A flock of migratory birds hiding among the reeds flap their wings vigorously. This is the winter scenery you can see when you go to the Suncheon Bay Haeryongseong Old House, which faces Suncheon Bay National Garden and Suncheon Dongcheon. If we are to talk about the history of the old house, we have to go back to 1675. This is because the 14th great-grandfather of Mr. Moon Chang-hoon, who currently runs the old house, came from Haenam to the Jeonju Lee family in Suncheon as a son-in-law. It is said that his grandfather settled down in Suncheon and made a fortune by developing tidal flats and salt farms, becoming a wealthy man in Suncheon Bay. He was also kind-hearted and never neglected travelers visiting the town. This kindness was passed down to his descendants and became a family tradition. Even now, the owner serves mung bean chicken soup for breakfast to guests. The old house was built in its current form in 1776, the year King Jeongjo ascended to the throne. It has maintained its original appearance for 240 years since the 7th great-grandfather, Cheonggye Moon Hyo-gwang, rebuilt it. It has been around for a long time, so the old-fashioned charm that has been created over time is extraordinary. The old house consists of the main building called Cheonggyedang (聽溪堂) after Mun Hyo-gwang’s nickname, the annex Seungjiwon (承志院), and a building where you can experience tea ceremonies. The guest rooms in the main building are named after flowers: azalea, peony, camellia, and plum blossom. Seungjiwon is the guest house where rooms were provided to guests in the past. The sight of two swans dozing in the warm sunlight pouring down on the wide yard and the yard with white bedding and laundry hanging out is quite affectionate. The Hwangto Experience Room was built by the owner himself so that you can rest in a warm room during the cold winter. The warm Ondol room, with its walls covered in Hwangto, is free from drafts and is full of warmth. You can enjoy the countryside scenery through three windows, including a round window of a decent size.
